These remains, together with the oldest structures—the church and the town hall—form one of the region's most valuable urban ensembles.
The town ranks among the oldest knightly strongholds in the Lubusz Land. The first mention—which does not specify the nature of the settlement but identifies the knight Gniewomir as its owner—dates back to 1302. The oldest document concerning the town is from 1302, and it is explicitly referred to as a town in 1319. It initially developed under Polish law, adopted Magdeburg law in the first half of the 14th century (1335), and finally received full town rights in the mid-15th century.
A few words of introduction
Świebodzin is a town where the historic centre has preserved a layout virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages, featuring a central rectangular market square and streets intersecting it at right angles. The medieval town plan remains clearly discernible today, defined by sections of fortifications, a moat, and a castle.
