Olsztyn

The fates of our countries were closely related. The Stalinist era is over, and Władysław Gomułka came to power in Poland. He was considered a liberal politician who was expected to change. Hungarians began to loudly express their solidarity with Poles. A ceremonial procession was organized in Budapest at the monument of General Józef Bem.

He is an important figure in our common history. Bem was a participant in the November Uprising, and later in the Hungarian independence struggle. So it symbolized the friendship of two nations. The wind of freedom blew over the communist bloc and the Hungarians wanted changes also in their country. It was then that a real libertarian uprising began. Unfortunately, Moscow did not allow the demonstrations to turn into a great national uprising. The Soviet army entered the Hungarian streets.

A relief operation has started in Poland. Poles began to report to blood donation points en masse. The culmination, however, was the aforementioned demonstration on October 30. It was organized by students of the Agricultural University. The inhabitants of Olsztyn spontaneously joined the march. They carried numerous banners with slogans such as: "We demand the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary", "Free Poland - free Hungary", "Down with the Soviets" or "All Olsztyn with us". The crowd was growing and the policemen trying to chase the demonstrators out were not afraid of them.

When the multi-thousand-strong parade reached the Red Army Square, a few young people climbed the facade of the tenement house. They took the plaque with the name of the square off it and replaced it with a new one. Thus, they renamed the Red Army Square into the Heroes of Hungary Square. Today this place is called General Bem Square.
